Clay Piece - This mini lesson was pretty fun. I didn't really follow the concept of making two pieces and scratching it together. This medium was also pretty messy. I didn't really like it. The clay was difficult because it would get dry quite fast, so you had to keep getting it wet etc. I did scratch the fins and such to get them to stick to the body. I painted it with watercolors. The con of using watercolors is that the brush would get dry too fast and then the color proportions would be messed up. Because of this, you can see the brush strokes on the piece. If I were to do this again, I would change the paint I used. It would be nicer if you could not see the paint strokes. Overall, it was kind of fun. It didn't take long.
Styrogami - I didn't like this mini lesson. I couldn't make anything that really appealed to me. I just did four different expressions, but I only took a picture of one. I learned that styrofoam sticks to everything and it is very annoying. I don't like this medium or style. I rather draw something than do this mini lesson. It just didn't appeal to me. I really don't find this piece successful at all. I wasn't really motivated to come up with something good, so I did faces that remind me of the faces on pumpkins. I would probably change what I did. Maybe, I would have poked a bunch of little holes in the styrofoam to avoid the mess and to create picture. Object Art - I enjoyed this mini lesson. I created a necklace and the resemblance of breasts with a clover. I then drew a dress and figure around it. I learned that you can really make art out of anything. The only hard part was getting the clover to stay in place while I drew the dress. I find this piece successful because it is unique. The whole drawing is done in pencil, so the green of the clover makes it pop. If I did this again, I would figure out how to get the clover to stay in place better. After I drew the dress it started to move more causing a bit of distress. This project has been my favorite so far. I used my favorite medium, watercolors, and incorporated it with something I found called Zentangles. It took me about three days to fully finish my project. It turned out pretty well, even though half the time I messed up the Zentangle somehow.
For this project, I took risks. The project itself was something I wasn't sure about. To start with, I used watercolors to make a circle type shape in the middle of the paper with about three different colors. I had to start off with the watercolors before the drawing because it would make the ink bleed. So, instead of coloring the elephant I decided to just put some random watercolors in the middle of the page. Some people didn't really understand that, but I think it looks cool. Then once that dried I started to draw the elephant. For it being my first time drawing an elephant, it is actually nice. Some of the legs look a little weird to me, but I'm human. Honestly, I went into this project having no idea what I was going to do. I think I decided to do the Zentangles when I just finished drawing the elephant. I was very unsure about that. On my first pattern, I messed a couple of swirls. Throughout the whole thing I messed up a lot. You can't really tell unless you look really close, so overall it looks put together. The only material that I chose that was considered new was the watercolors. I have watercolors at home so it wasn't too difficult, but I'm still getting used to mixing colors and the water to color ratio. It was the first time I used watercolors on a main project though so that was a little scary. As I was painting, some of the colors looked really gray and flat out unattractive. That made me a little worried. I developed my art making skills. I learned about Zentangles which you would think wouldn't be too hard, but once you start it's easy to mess up unless you are very concentrated. Also, I did the whole elephant in different patterns so finding the right ones and getting them just right was difficult. I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Not to mention, I water colored in the middle of a page then to draw an animal I had never drawn before in ink. So overall, I did learn more about the technique of Zentangles and I'm becoming more familiar with watercolors and pen drawings. I did gain more skill with the other materials I used. From taking this class, I have learned that I really enjoy watercolors as stated in earlier posts. Water coloring randomly in the middle of the page really was out of my comfort zone, but it really add some pizzazz to the piece. So far in this class, I have used pen to go over my drawings. For the first project, I went over a pencil outline of the animals, but for this project I went head on with the ink. I'm learning how to fix easy mistakes. This project was very exciting and nerve racking, but I would do it all over again. Remixed Character -
This mini lesson was fairly entertaining. I discovered that it is actually easier to remix a character than people may think. For this lesson, I used acrylic paint to color the picture. It was the first time I had ever used paint in this class and I learned a bit more about mixing colors. The two characters I combined were Sponge Bob and a Japanese character called Mamegoma. This piece is successful because of the oddity of it. I had never seen anything like it until I created it. This lesson was a mess for me because I got brown paint on the white parts of the drawing and everything is misshapened. If I could change anything about this piece I would've been cleaner with my painting skills. Watercolor practice - This mini lesson was by far my favorite. I liked it so much that I went out and bought my own watercolors. Something about the way the brush moves on the paper creates a calming effect for me. Watercolors are fairly easy to use just be aware of how much or how little of water you are using. I practiced on a sketch of an elephant that I did for my Artist Steal main project. This piece is successful because of the sketch and the beautiful combination of water colors. Something I would've changed is using less water and just painting the elephant instead of practicing around it. Either way, it turned out pretty good. Daily Monster Ink Drawing- This mini lesson is probably my least favorite. We had small straws and blew ink onto the paper to create a "monster." This technique was pretty hard for me because I kept blowing too much ink and I couldn't get shape that I liked. This piece was successful because of the looks the monsters are portraying. The monster on the left looks very mischievous and the one on the left looks frightened. If I could change anything about this piece I would use less ink and not draw the lines that are on the second monster. It looked better without them. |
